Don’t Miss: Two Works by Company Members at Student Showcase

San Francisco Ballet’s 2016 Season may be over, but the San Francisco Ballet School students are busy rehearsing for the annual Student Showcase, which opens in less than two weeks.

Last month we talked to Hamburg Ballet’s Johan Stegli about what it was like setting Neumeier’s Yondering on School students, so today we’re spotlighting two more works being presented on Showcase; both ballets are by current Company members Wei Wang and James Sofranko.

With his new work, Focus, Corps de Ballet member Wei Wang says he’s “doing something different.” For one thing, his five dancers will perform in socks instead of the usual pointe shoes or ballet slippers. In addition, the more organic feel of his choreography is juxtaposed with classical ballet steps for a hybrid of the old and new.

Wang trained at SF Ballet School before being named apprentice in 2012 and corps de ballet member in 2013, so he’s familiar with the Student Showcase performances. Just four years ago, he himself was as a Trainee performing at the Showcase, eagerly anticipating a professional career in dance.

Soloist James Sofranko is another familiar face to School students. He previously choreographed Mozart Symphony for the 2015 Student Showcase, with the work being praised as “elegantly wrought and intensely musical” by the San Francisco Chronicle. This year, the students will perform Sofranko’s Means to an End which premiered in fall 2015, as part of a week-long collaboration between SF Ballet School Trainees and Houston Ballet II.

See Wei Wang’s piece onstage May 25 and 27, and James Sofranko’s piece onstage May 25, 26, and 27. Tickets are on sale now for SF Ballet School’s 2016 Student Showcase, May 25-27, 2016.
