Sharing The Gift Of Dance — In NYC And Closer To Home

It is hard to believe that in less than one week we will be on a plane to New York City! Time has certainly flown by, but the anticipation has sure been building in the studios, as we are looking forward to sharing with the audience in New York all that we have been working on.

With 8 mixed-rep ballets and six performances of Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella to prepare, rehearsals have been running well into the evening. And while we may not get to see the sun very much these days, it has been a nice surprise to admire City Hall washed in purple light while leaving the studios at night.

Throughout the entire month of October, City Hall is basking in purple light to mark Domestic Violence Awareness month. This issue has been close to my heart due to a local organization I have been supporting called Because Justice Matters. BJM’s mission is to reach women who are victims of exploitation and domestic violence, and offer support to those experiencing isolation due to economic and cultural challenges.

To further accomplish this mission, BJM is in the process of launching its much-anticipated women’s center in the heart of the Tenderloin called The Well. The Well will provide a space for women and their families to foster a deeper sense of community and healing in relationships. Back in July, my friend Ruthie Kim, founder of Because Justice Matters, contacted me about her vision of having a dance studio space at The Well. I was touched by her desire to want to share the gift of dance with those who may not have the means to take classes or the appropriate space to do so.

Fellow dancer Kimberly Braylock and I headed to the construction site to help give advice about the layout of the dance studio space

The final product! Isn’t it beautiful?

I am grateful to experience the joy of dancing daily. It has brought much beauty to my life and I can’t wait for that same gift to be shared with the women and children of the Tenderloin. Last Friday I attended a fundraiser for The Well and other pursuits by Because Justice Matters — and I had no idea that two tickets to a program in our 2014 Repertory Season had been donated. It was such a pleasant surprise and it happened to be one of the most popular auction items on the night!
